Non-degradable plastics are poisoning our oceans, wildlife and our own health. Straws are among the most polluting items; they are generally only used once for about 10 minutes while existing much longer than a lifetime. The ‘Plastic Soup’ bracelets, made from gold- or silver-plated melted straws, direct our attention to this environmental issue.

(Gijs Bakker
Gijs Bakker (Amersfoort, 1942) is trained as a jewelry and industrial-designer at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and the Konstfack Skolen in Stockholm, Sweden. His designs cover jewelry, home accessories and household appliances, furniture, interiors, public spaces and exhibitions.
Bakker has taught at different schools, amongst which the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts in Arnhem, Delft University of Technology and the Design Academy Eindhoven were he worked since 1987 until 2012, since 2000 as head of the Masters Program.
He is co-founder of `Droog Design' in 1993 and of `Chi ha paura...?' in 1995.
Jewellery and design in collections include: Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Stedelijk Museum 's Hertogenbosch; Powerhouse Museum, Sydney; Denver Museum of Art, Colorado; Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York; Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Awards : 2012, The Best International Jewellery Designer, Andrea Palladio International Jewellery Awards; 2011, Lifetime Achievement Award, Sanoma Living Awards; 2007, Benno Premsela Award (for his work with Droog); 1996, RA Award '96, Amsterdam; 1995, Prins Bernhard Fonds Award for Applied Art and Architecture; 1988, Françoise van den Bosch Award.
